2009

I know some of you will think I am quite mad – especially as I actually did come face to face with a Great White Shark in August.

That’s me with the duck and the shark is a 5 metre, 1500 kg male called Johnny!!

Nonetheless, I am going to offer myself as shark bait, without a cage and for the last time swim 3 ocean races to raise money to fund the research to find a Cure for Cancer. Here is my mantra:

Many people have been very generous to me in previous years in my quest to help fund a Cure. And I feel a little uneasy asking for support one last time. So please, if you have been a supporter in the past and feel you have done enough, don’t read any further. I am grateful for all you have done so far.

However if you think that you could help, then please read on.

The first race will be at the end of January, The Big Swim - 2.7 km from Palm Beach to Whale Beach – that’s when you swim towards New Zealand and turn right if the Great Whites haven’t got you first.

And if I survive that, I’ll swim the Cole Classic the next weekend – 2 kms around Manly.

And, if I make those two, I’ll swim the one that gave me hypothermia last year and a shoulder injury that destroyed my rotator cuff and kept me out of the water for 6 months!

So it is with some trepidation that I approach this year’s races! I’m back into training 4 times a week – along with regular point therapy and acupuncture to try and keep the shoulder in tact. I did try the suction caps treatment but the bruising was so horrendous that I stopped that.

And I am told that I am the 6th oldest in the team of 302 – there are some competitions you don’t want to win – not even come in the top 10 but such is life – weren’t those Ned Kelly’s last words?

If you would support me one last time for CanToo, I would be very grateful.

The only competition I want to win is a personal best in my total fundraising. So every one of your TAX DEDUCTIBLE donations will get me, wave by crashing wave, closer to my goal.

2008

Hello everyone

Over the last two years, my wonderful sponsors and supporters have helped me raise just over $10,000 for the Cure Cancer Australia Foundation. Just over two years ago, in October 2007, after my back and legs stopped me running ever again, I decided to train for and swim the Cole Classic 2km ocean swim not only try to fix my back but more importantly to raise money for cancer research.

I did this in honour of my mum, close friend Kerrie Nairn, my aunt and uncle, two close friends with breast cancer and my Australian Dad who has prostate cancer. Then the husband-to-be of one of my closest friends died of cancer days before they were due to be married in a wonderful ceremony. And sadly a number of other close friends are now dealing with this dreadful disease and it breaks my heart.

So for the last two years and two months, I have trained between 3 and 5 days most weeks. I’m not getting any faster but I am staying fit and have participated in 9 ocean races, often terrified at the start but emerging generally unscathed and elated - and you get the tax deduction!!!.

The 4 minute clip also contains some information on how much Can Too has raised in total and the number of researchers it has been able to fund.

This time, I’m going to do three races with Can Too to try to fund THE breakthrough Cure. I’ll do the 2km Cole Classic at Manly again (they changed the course last year because of heavy seas closed the beach!). I’ll also do the 2km Bondi Classic. And don’t ask me why but I am going to swim ‘The Big Swim’ again, from Palm Beach to Whale Beach on the Northern Beaches of Sydney. Last year was simply terrifying with around 100 people rescued/helped from the surf.

It was 2.7+km of really, really rough water, out though the heads and around the coastline.

And yes, I’m still scared. Thank goodness I have Mark, the most encouraging and supportive husband who, graciously and patiently, puts up with me experiencing The Almond Effect® before most races! Come and be in my cheer squad at any of the races – it would be an added bonus to have you there.

I know that this year may see a lot of you watching your discretionary expenditure. However I will be grateful for any contribution you can make – I truly want to live in a world where this insidious disease is under control. Will you help me please?

Anyway I will leave it to your great philanthropic approach to life and to our community.

Many many thanks. Contact me using any of the details at the bottom of this page for further details if you need them.

Wish me luck! I’ll let you know how I go. If you hear from me, I survived!!

Warm wishes
Anne
